# Base Labs, Hugging Face, and Goodfire launch open-weight AI safety effort

Base Labs, a research group spun out of Baseten, launched a partnership with Hugging Face and Goodfire to develop and publish methods for training and monitoring open-weight AI models.

**Why it matters:** Open-weight models are harder to control after release than closed ones, so tooling built specifically for training and monitoring them safely fills a real gap as open models close the capability gap with frontier labs — Chinese open-weight models are reportedly already only about four months behind the US frontier.
