# GitHub retires GitHub Models, its AI model API service

GitHub has retired GitHub Models, the service that let developers experiment with and call various AI models directly through GitHub. The shutdown removes a low-friction way many developers used to test models inside their existing GitHub workflow.

**Why it matters:** GitHub Models was one of the more accessible ways to try multiple model providers without separate API keys and billing; its retirement pushes users toward standalone provider APIs or aggregators. It's a reminder that model-hosting layers bolted onto a broader platform remain vulnerable to being cut when they don't fit the core business.
