# Huawei pulls forward next-gen Ascend AI chip roadmap by quarters

*2026-09-18 · Source: [Tom's Hardware](https://www.tomshardware.com/tech-industry/artificial-intelligence/huawei-details-ai-accelerator-roadmap-pulls-in-next-generation-ascend-npus-by-quarters-fp4-performance-of-the-ascend-960pr-doubles-expectations)*

Huawei detailed its AI accelerator roadmap, moving up next-generation Ascend NPUs and Kunpeng CPUs by several quarters. The company said FP4 performance on the upcoming Ascend 960PR doubles prior expectations, and laid out scale-up and scale-out connectivity plans modeled on Nvidia's AI-factory approach.

**Why it matters:** This cuts against the assumption that China's chip industry trails Nvidia by years — it lands right after reports that China's open-weight models are only about four months behind the US frontier and that China obtains banned Nvidia chips through workarounds. Faster domestic chip progress would reduce China's reliance on both smuggled hardware and export-control loopholes.

**Topics:** chips, policy
