# Linus Torvalds posts first LLM-assisted patch to Linux kernel

*2026-10-16 · Source: [Tom's Hardware](https://www.tomshardware.com/software/linux/linus-torvalds-posts-his-first-llm-assisted-patch-to-the-linux-kernel-after-issuing-clear-pro-ai-directives-the-bossman-makes-use-of-ai-tooling-himself)*

Torvalds submitted his first patch made with AI tooling to the Linux kernel. A synthetic test reportedly showed a 23x performance improvement. The move follows his earlier directives about how AI tools may be used in kernel work.

**Why it matters:** The kernel's lead maintainer using AI tooling himself is a strong signal for open source norms, where AI-generated contributions have been contentious. It likely makes AI-assisted patches more acceptable to maintainers, while a synthetic benchmark gain says little yet about real-world value.

**Topics:** products, open source
