# Maintainers say a quarter of AI-era pull requests are slop

*2026-10-21 · Source: [The Register](https://www.theregister.com/ai-and-ml/2026/10/21/ai-cuts-coding-time-but-its-also-filling-open-sources-inbox-with-crap/5304389)*

Open source maintainers estimate about a quarter of incoming pull requests are low-quality, rising to 31% on larger projects. The report says AI cuts coding time while also flooding project inboxes with poor submissions.

**Why it matters:** Generating a patch is now nearly free but reviewing one is not, so the cost shifts onto volunteer maintainers. Expect more projects to add contribution gates, AI-disclosure rules or automated triage, similar to how sites are now blocking AI agents.

**Topics:** open source, products
