# Mathematicians dispute OpenAI's 166-page Navier-Stokes proof

*2026-10-17 · Source: [The Decoder](https://the-decoder.com/mathematicians-say-openai-doesnt-understand-its-own-navier-stokes-proof/)*

OpenAI submitted a 166-page solution to the Navier-Stokes problem, but several expert groups say the actual methodology differs from what OpenAI described. Reportedly OpenAI does not fully understand its own proof.

**Why it matters:** This follows OpenAI's release of hundreds of AI-generated math manuscripts and DeepMind's AlphaProof results, and shows the bottleneck moving from generating proofs to verifying and understanding them. If a lab cannot explain where a proof's ideas came from, credibility of AI-driven mathematical claims will rest on independent expert checking.
