# OpenAI says GPT-6 Astra designed a hardware device in under a week

OpenAI's hardware team used GPT-6 Astra to design a device for its Codex coding agent in under a week, covering enclosure, circuit board and firmware. Several revision rounds were needed before production because the model missed manufacturing tolerances. A newer internal model scores significantly higher on OpenAI's engineering benchmark.

**Why it matters:** It is a concrete, if self-reported, example of models moving from software into physical-product engineering. The tolerance failures show where the gap remains: real-world constraints that need human review. Combined with claims of near self-building AI, it shows labs using their own models to speed up their own development.
