# Report: AI data center e-waste could triple prior estimates by 2050

A new report from the nonprofit Basel Action Network estimates AI-driven data center e-waste could grow enough by 2050 to fill roughly 23 million shipping containers. The higher figure comes from counting all the supporting infrastructure needed for AI servers, not just the servers themselves.

**Why it matters:** This adds a hardware-disposal dimension to the AI infrastructure boom's environmental costs, which so far has been dominated by energy and water-use debates. Combined with recent reporting on data centers' gas consumption and local community pushback, it strengthens the case that AI's physical footprint is becoming a bigger political liability.

**Topics:** policy, chips
