Australia to require AI data centers to match their own power use

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced the "Australian Standards for A.I.," a national framework requiring AI data centers to produce as much power as they consume. The framework also addresses water efficiency and intellectual property protections.

Why it matters: This is one of the more concrete national policy responses yet to AI data centers' surging electricity demand, and a "produce what you use" rule is stricter than most jurisdictions have proposed. If it holds, it could steer where hyperscalers site future Australian AI infrastructure, and other governments may borrow the model.
