Claude Code makes Auto mode default for Pro, Max, Team plans
Anthropic has made Auto mode the default setting in Claude Code for users on Pro, Max, and Team plans, per Simon Willison. In Auto mode, the coding agent proceeds through multi-step tasks and makes routine judgment calls without pausing to ask for confirmation, only stopping when genuinely blocked.
Why it matters: This flips the default toward more autonomous operation for the majority of Claude Code users, following a broader trend among agentic coding tools of minimizing interruptions in favor of speed. It also raises the stakes for guardrails, since more actions will now execute without an explicit human checkpoint unless a user opts back into manual confirmation.
