Fields Medalist Jacob Tsimerman joins OpenAI's safety team

Jacob Tsimerman, a newly awarded Fields Medalist, is leaving the University of Toronto to join OpenAI and work on AI safety. He previously published a paper analyzing scenarios where AI could contribute to human extinction and called for far more investment in safety research.

Why it matters: It's a rare case of a top mathematician moving from pure theory into applied AI safety work at a frontier lab, at a time when labs are racing to hire credentialed researchers to bolster safety credibility. It also lends outside academic weight to extinction-risk arguments that labs have mostly made internally.
