Musk quietly spent ~$1B on power supplier APR Energy for xAI

An FTC filing revealed Elon Musk paid an estimated $1 billion for APR Energy, which owns mobile natural gas and diesel turbine generators capable of producing more than a gigawatt of power. The acquisition, intended to help power xAI, was never publicly announced and surfaced only through the regulatory filing.

Why it matters: It's another data point in the scramble to secure power for AI compute — mobile turbine generators sidestep the years-long wait for grid interconnects and permitting that otherwise constrains new data centers. The secrecy also echoes a broader pattern of AI infrastructure deals surfacing only after the fact rather than through disclosure.
