OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap departs after eight years

Brad Lightcap, OpenAI's special projects lead and former chief operating officer, is leaving the company after an eight-year run. In an internal memo, he said he plans to start something new, focused on what he called important issues the world needs to get right in AI's next phase. He'll remain at OpenAI for a few more weeks during the transition.

Why it matters: Lightcap is one of the last remaining members of OpenAI's founding-era leadership team, and his exit follows a string of senior departures as the company restructures around its for-profit conversion and IPO prospects. Continued churn at the top raises questions about institutional continuity as OpenAI scales infrastructure commitments worth hundreds of billions of dollars.
