Apple reportedly building AI server with M-series Ultra chips

Apple is said to be developing an enterprise server built around multiple M-series Ultra chips for AI inference, according to The Information. A launch isn't expected before 2029, and Apple is reportedly considering Nvidia's NVLink Fusion to connect the chips.

Why it matters: This would be Apple's first enterprise server since it retired the Xserve line in 2011, driven by demand from developers who already favor Mac Studio and Mac Mini for local AI inference, including reported bulk hardware purchases by OpenAI and Anthropic. A 2029 timeline signals a long-term bet rather than a response to current chip shortages.
