Backflip AI converts 3D scans into editable CAD files

Backflip AI released a model that turns raw 3D scans into fully editable, parametric computer-aided design (CAD) models in minutes instead of hours. The startup, backed by $30 million in funding, ships the tool as an add-in for Autodesk Fusion. CEO Greg Mark says most factories have digital models for less than 1% of their parts.

Why it matters: Reverse-engineering physical parts into CAD is a major bottleneck in manufacturing and a big reason factories can't easily digitize legacy equipment. If the conversion holds up on real-world scans, it removes a manual step that has resisted automation even as AI has moved into most other design workflows.
