Google Maps adds AI agents for food ordering and hotel bookings

Google added agentic features to Google Maps that let the app place food orders and book hotels directly, rather than just provide directions or information. The update is meant to turn Maps into a task-completing assistant.

Why it matters: This fits a broader shift where general-purpose AI agents take actions on users' behalf rather than just retrieving information -- a category Amazon, Microsoft, OpenAI, and others are also racing into via their newly agreed agent plugin standard. Embedding transaction capability into a habitual app like Maps gives Google a distribution advantage few competitors can match.
