DeepSeek releases V4.1-Flash-1017 and opens Search and Fetch APIs
DeepSeek released V4.1-Flash-1017 as an open-weight model that it says beats larger rivals on agentic tasks, finishes faster and writes shorter outputs than the September version. It also opened its internal search engine through Search and Fetch APIs at $0.75 per 1,000 calls. API users in tools like Claude Code and Codex get free access for now.
Why it matters: DeepSeek keeps pushing per-task cost down while holding agentic quality, which pressures the pricing of closed frontier models. Exposing a first-party search and fetch layer also gives agent builders a cheap alternative to third-party search APIs, and the free access in popular coding tools is a clear bid for developer share.
