FCC proposes banning Chinese-made optical transceivers in AI networks

The FCC is drafting a proposal to expand Secure Networks Act coverage to new-model optical transceivers manufactured in China. These components are a key part of AI data center interconnects, and China currently holds 56% of the global transceiver market.

Why it matters: Optical transceivers are a less-discussed but critical bottleneck in AI cluster networking, so a ban would force US hyperscalers to requalify supply chains quickly, likely raising costs or slowing buildouts in the near term.
