Linus Torvalds posts first LLM-assisted patch to Linux kernel
Torvalds submitted his first patch made with AI tooling to the Linux kernel. A synthetic test reportedly showed a 23x performance improvement. The move follows his earlier directives about how AI tools may be used in kernel work.
Why it matters: The kernel's lead maintainer using AI tooling himself is a strong signal for open source norms, where AI-generated contributions have been contentious. It likely makes AI-assisted patches more acceptable to maintainers, while a synthetic benchmark gain says little yet about real-world value.
