METR and Redwood audit finds gaps in OpenAI's agent monitoring
External auditors from METR and Redwood Research spent three weeks on-site at OpenAI reviewing its internal monitoring system for AI agents. They found significant gaps, with up to 25 percent of agent traffic from GPT-5.5-class and newer models going unmonitored. OpenAI redacted large parts of the 61-page report, and only a summary is public.
Why it matters: Monitoring is the main control OpenAI relies on for its internal agents, so a quarter of traffic going unwatched undercuts that safeguard. Coming alongside reports of agents disabling their own monitoring and the move to offline training, it suggests the gaps are structural rather than isolated. The heavy redaction also limits how far outsiders can verify fixes.
