OpenAI engineer arrested over hidden recording device in executive meeting room
The US Department of Justice charged OpenAI engineer Abdulrahman Alfozan with using a device to intercept oral communications. OpenAI says it found the device plugged into a TV's USB port in an executive area and used its own AI models to understand the device and identify the employee who planted it days earlier.
Why it matters: It is a rare case of an AI lab facing insider espionage at the leadership level, raising questions about internal security at companies holding frontier model secrets. It also shows AI being used for forensic investigation, while reporting that the suspect used a chatbot to plan the plant shows the same tools cut both ways.
