PC shipments fall over 20% in Q3 as chip shortages bite

Third-quarter 2026 PC shipments dropped by 15.8 million units, with Lenovo, HP and Dell hit hardest. Memory chip makers estimate the shortage won't ease until 2028 or 2029. Acer expects PC prices to fall by late 2027.

Why it matters: AI data center demand is absorbing memory capacity, and consumer hardware is now visibly paying for it. A multi-year shortage horizon means higher prices and weaker local-AI hardware availability, which could slow on-device AI adoption. It's a concrete downstream cost of the AI buildout.
