New York City bans AI tools in public schools through 8th grade
New York City has banned the use of AI tools in its public schools through the end of middle school. The policy applies to the city's public school system, which is the largest in the United States.
Why it matters: As the largest US public school system, NYC's policy sets a highly visible precedent other districts may look to as they weigh their own classroom AI rules. It also cuts against the ed-tech push to bring AI tutoring into K-12 schools, betting instead that younger students should build core skills before using AI assistance.
