OpenAI's Jony Ive-designed device is a $300+ smart speaker
Bloomberg reports OpenAI's first hardware device with former Apple designer Jony Ive is a battery-powered, hockey-puck-sized smart speaker with no display. It has a camera, sensors, lights, and some moving parts that indicate when it's responding, and is expected to launch in 2027 for over $300.
Why it matters: This is OpenAI's first real step into consumer hardware, competing directly with devices like Amazon Echo and Google Home but built around a conversational AI assistant instead of voice commands. A camera-equipped always-on device also raises the same privacy questions that have dogged smart speakers for a decade, now with a far more capable model behind it.
