Pentagon reportedly in talks for $5bn loan to Fluidstack
The US Department of Defense is reportedly negotiating a $5 billion loan to AI compute provider Fluidstack, to be funded through the Pentagon's Office of Strategic Capital. The deal has not been officially confirmed by either party.
Why it matters: Direct Pentagon financing of an AI compute provider would be a new form of government involvement in the AI infrastructure buildout, beyond the power and subsidy deals seen so far, such as the DOE's Iowa nuclear loan for Google. It raises questions about strategic dependence on and oversight of who controls frontier compute capacity.
